Flyfishing Basics: Casting Part 2

Today we take a look at the 2nd part of the video series presented by Tight Lines Fly Shop.  There are 3 things we’re going to learn:

  1. False casting
  2. Plane of the rod
  3. Shooting line
I learned in this video what I was doing wrong, before one of my nephews killed my fly rod, when casting - I wasn’t letting the line unfold before tilting my rod tip down.  That explains a lot.  Anyway, here’s a little more detailed look at what you’ll find:

False Casting:
  • strip off a bit of line
  • your left hand is your control hand
  • the key is: unfold - unfold
  • your forearm is what sends the line strong and fast, do not use your wrist!
  • one more time - the line has to unfold

Plane of the rod: 2 different thoughts

  • one thought is straight overhead
  • second thought is it doesn’t matter, so long as the rod tip travels on a straight plane - the tip draws a straight line in your cast.

Shooting line - the trick to getting the distance

  • allow a little to slip through your thumb & index finger
  • on forward stop - let a little line out
  • stop rod & tip down

2nd way of shooting line

  • create an “o” with your thumb and index finger
  • forward stop - line shoots out - unfolds -  rod tip down

Time to kick back and enjoy the vid!
